A Better Way to Clean and Line Pipe
Cleaning and lining old water mains is a common method used by utilities to extend the life of buried water main infrastructure. Why clean and line? Because over time, the build-up of iron scale inside a water main – especially small diameter mains – can reduce its water-carrying capacity. Cleaning a water main of tuberculation helps to improve water flow, while lining helps to prevent future accumulation of scale and can help add structural strength depending on the type of lining that is used. But, this can be a costly and time consuming process. What if there was a better way to hel[...] Article | Feb 24, 2016

Field Trip - Large Diameter Leak Detection
I recently had the opportunity to spend a day with our field engineers who were performing leak detection on a variety of large-diameter transmission mains in Hamilton, Ontario. It was interesting to observe the team leader open, test the air and enter the access chamber. The crew inspected the exposed section of water pipe surface, valves, and other equipment for visible leaks, rust, or damage. A hissing sound was traced to a fine spray of water coming from a leaking valve gasket and noted for utility follow-up.[...] Article | Oct 28, 2015
Monitoring Transmission Mains for Leaks
For the most critical water transmission mains, a greater frequency of information on leak status is often preferable to periodic "snapshot-in-time" methods — especially since leaks can occur anytime between inspections. In contrast with a periodic leak survey approach, permanent monitoring offers the unique advantage of being able to detect a leak early, and steadily monitor its progression to determine the urgency of repair.[...] Article | Sep 13, 2015
