FACT: On average, 700 water main breaks occur every day nationwide.

Your water transmission mains are a valuable asset and any leakage or failure can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

One solution is to set up a conventional acoustical leak detection system. But this may be too expensive or unsuitable to implement on a temporary or permanent basis, or too difficult to access.

What Echologics can offer is a pipeline leak or strain detection solution for virtually any pipe installation. It’s permanent leak detection and permanent leak monitoring. In real time.

Introducing LeakMonitoring  – a fiber optic (FO) based service that detects even the smallest changes in temperature (indicating a fluid leak).

Together with our partner Omnisens, a leading manufacturer of fiber optics, we have developed an accurate and highly sensitive alternative to regular leak detection methods that can cost-effectively monitor high value pipelines on a continuous basis.

The system is based on the concept of distributed fiber optic sensing. A fiber optic cable is used as a continuous sensor capable of monitoring temperature or strain. If a pipe has a leak or is subject to high stress due to an unwanted movement in the soil, this will cause a local change in temperature or strain. Thus pinpointing leaks or potentials can be easily achieved with a high degree of accuracy.

And if a fiber optic cable is bonded to the pipe, any changes in pipe strain can also be identified. Best of all, the system can pinpoint leaks to within a meter of its location, and can be programmed to monitor the temperature as often as desired (every 1/2 hour is typical).

A basic system can monitor up to 30 km (18.6 mi) of pipe on a single fiber, and signal amplifiers can be added to extend this range to up to 250 km (155.3 mi). Amazing, so say our customers.
