TORONTO, April 27, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- San Jose Water Company (SJWC) has selected Echologics’ leak detection technology to continuously monitor its pipeline network to help the utility measure and reduce water loss.
SJWC selected the EchoShore®-DX technology, Echologics’ fixed leak detection technology for distribution mains, after extensively evaluating several leak detection technologies because of its proven ability to quickly identify and accurately locate leaks.
“This is truly a game-changing smart technology that will become a critical part of our water loss control program and enable us to promote the long-term sustainability of our limited water resources,” said Jake Walsh, Director of Planning at SJWC. “For the first time, we have the ability to be notified within 24 hours of a leak developing on a water main and can monitor leak progression, and assign resources to repair leaks before they surface and begin to impact customers.”
SJWC serves more than one million people in California’s greater San Jose metropolitan area and is considered one of the most technically advanced water providers in the United States. The project will be the largest deployment of Echologics’ fixed leak detection technology, with a planned deployment of more than 10,000 nodes throughout SJWC’s service area.
Using advanced technology to detect leaks presented an excellent opportunity for SJWC to not only conserve water but also improve customer service, as automated leak detection results in quicker response times, thereby reducing water loss and reducing or eliminating property damage and service interruptions before a catastrophic main break occurs. Moving forward, daily reports and dashboards will enable SJWC to identify and monitor the status of potential leaks throughout its service area.
“Industry leaders, such as San Jose Water Company, are leading the way in implementing advanced smart water technologies that will help address challenges associated with aging water infrastructure,” said Marc Bracken, vice president and general manager of Echologics. “The EchoShore-DX technology takes the guesswork out of leak detection with features and insights that have not been available to water utilities before. These features help them make informed data-driven decisions about how to best manage their water infrastructure.”
The EchoShore-DX fixed leak detection technology incorporates the latest generation of acoustic sensors to non-invasively monitor water pipe infrastructure through existing water assets – fire hydrants. Sensors are installed on standard fire hydrants and continuously monitor the pipes for new and existing leaks. The early detection capability provides utilities with numerous benefits, such as prioritization of repairs based on actual need, effective allocation of repair crews and avoidance of catastrophic water main breaks.

TORONTO, Feb. 20, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) has again extended its contract with Echologics for pipeline condition assessment services for an additional one-year term. This is the second extension of the contract between WSSC and Echologics.
Echologics, a Mueller Technologies company, has assessed more than 200 miles of WSSC's water pipeline since 2013. The one-year extension, which is worth up to $2 million, will allow WSSC to assess even more miles of cast iron, ductile iron and steel water mains in its water distribution network.
Echologics is a leading developer and provider of smart water technologies, including acoustic-based technologies for leak detection, pipe condition assessment and water loss management, which allow water utilities to intelligently manage their assets. WSSC is among the largest water and wastewater utilities in the United States.
WSSC will deploy Echologics’ ePulse® technology. This proprietary and patented acoustic pipe condition assessment technology is a non-invasive solution that is designed to provide water utilities with cost-effective and accurate measurement of the remaining average wall thickness of a selected length of pipe. It has the added benefit of being able to simultaneously identify leaks.
“Our continued partnership with Echologics demonstrates our commitment to investing in our aging infrastructure and delivering excellent customer service,” said WSSC general manager and chief executive officer Carla A. Reid. “By using the latest technology to assess the condition of older pipes, we can quickly identify any issues and take immediate action to minimize impacts to our customers.”
By measuring the remaining average wall thickness of pipe, water utilities can prioritize repairs and replacement of mains. This critical information can help utilities efficiently target capital spending, mitigate risks associated with deteriorating pipe walls and reduce non-revenue water.
"WSSC is proactively managing its water infrastructure to ensure that its customers continue to have access to safe, clean drinking water,” said Marc Bracken, vice president and general manager of Echologics. “By analyzing the remaining pipe wall thickness of their mains, we are able to help WSSC minimize service disruptions, operate more efficiently and reduce water loss.”
TORONTO (November 10, 2016) – New Jersey American Water has selected Echologics’ continuous leak detection technology, EchoShore®-DX, to reduce water loss, prioritize repairs and help maximize the life of its buried water infrastructure assets.
A subsidiary of American Water, New Jersey American Water, is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, serving approximately 2.6 million people. The utility installed more than 1,000 of Echologics’ leak detection nodes in six water systems across the state. In the first six months of operation, Echologics’ DX technology enabled New Jersey American Water to identify and repair more than 50 active leaks, with total recovery of more than 1,000 gpm in water loss.
“New Jersey American Water’s mission is to provide our customers with high-quality reliable water service, and we are committed to using technology that allows us to increase our efficiencies and the value of the services we provide,” said Kevin Kirwan, Vice President of Operations for New Jersey American Water. “The large-scale implementation of Echologics’ technology has enabled us to continuously monitor for leaks in a non-invasive manner.”
Echologics pioneered the development of a proprietary, acoustic-based system, which can be used in the field to non-invasively locate leaks with exceptional accuracy without breaking ground or inserting tools in the water system.
Echologics’ leak detection technology incorporates the latest generation of acoustic sensors. The sensors are built into a standard fire hydrant cap, and are capable of identifying extremely faint acoustical noises emitted by leaks before they become detectable by conventional methods. This early detection capability enables utilities to prioritize repairs based on actual need and the most effective allocation of repair crews.
“One of the challenges we face is how to reduce non-revenue water, which is water that has been treated but is lost in the distribution system before reaching its intended destination,” said Don Shields, Vice President and Director of Engineering for New Jersey American Water. “With Echologics’ technology, we have been able to reduce the amount of non-revenue water by detecting active leaks and prioritizing repairs before they became significant issues, ensuring that we are able to meet our commitments to our customers.”

TORONTO, Oct. 03, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The City of Fountain Valley, California has selected Echologics to assess the condition of its water distribution mains to help maintain its water infrastructure, prioritize pipe replacement and reduce the amount of treated water lost to leaks.
Echologics will assess the condition of up to 75 miles of pipe over a 5-year period using its condition assessment technology. The mains that will be inspected will be of various diameters and materials, including asbestos cement and mortar-lined pipes.
The majority of Fountain Valley distribution mains were installed in the 1960s and 1970s, and the condition assessment program will be used to develop a pipe replacement program.
“We want to have a plan in place before any issues arise that could disrupt service,” said Mark Sprague, Field Services Manager with the City of Fountain Valley. Sprague added that the non-invasive aspect of the technology was a key factor in deciding to partner with Echologics.
“By not having to introduce anything into the distribution system, we reduce the risk of losing treated water during the assessment process, which is especially beneficial when we are experiencing a drought,” he said.
Echologics’ condition assessment solution is the industry’s first approach that can identify the condition of both distribution and transmission mains, while simultaneously searching for leaks, all without the need for large excavations or service disruptions. This ability enables utilities to address issues or have plans in place before leaks disrupt service.
Acoustic sensors are attached to existing contact points, such as fire hydrants, valves or directly in contact with a pipe. A sound wave is induced in the pipeline and travels along the pipe. The acoustic sensors capture the time it takes the sound wave to travel between two sensor stations and computer algorithms determine a condition grade of good, moderate or poor for the inspected section.
“Fountain Valley is proactively managing its water infrastructure to ensure that its residents continue to have access to safe, clean drinking water,” said Marc Bracken, vice president and general manager of Echologics. “Our condition assessment technology will help them make informed, data-driven decisions about how to prioritize capital spending and improve customer service.”

ATLANTA, May 5, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Echologics, an affiliate of Mueller Water Products, Inc. (NYSE:MWA) is monitoring a three-mile section of a critical water main beneath the Las Vegas Strip for the Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD), the Company announced today.
Installed in 1963, the 30-inch water main supplies up to 7.5 million gallons of water per day to resorts, casinos and attractions, among other users.
LVVWD is deploying Echologics' EchoShore® TX leak detection platform. The new smart technology platform is at the forefront of transmission main monitoring technologies and enables customers to better manage aging water pipeline infrastructure and reduce water loss due to leakage. It is part of Mueller's expanding portfolio of leak detection solutions.
The EchoShore TX platform combines Echologics' proven acoustic leak detection technology with leading-edge wireless connectivity to create a non-intrusive and cost-effective monitoring solution. In Las Vegas, acoustic sensors have been placed along the transmission main to listen for leaks. Data is streamed to the LVVWD and displayed on a dashboard where Echologics' software enables the staff to make more informed operating decisions.
"Part of our organizational mission is to provide all of our customers with world-class water service through reliable and cost-effective systems," said John Entsminger, LVVWD General Manager. "Consistent with that mission, this monitoring technology is designed to alert us to any small leaks in the area, allowing us to schedule and coordinate repairs before they become more severe. This minimizes impacts to our customers and avoids higher costs associated with emergency repair situations."
"The Las Vegas Valley Water District has long been a leader in managing water, using smart technology to promote conservation of water and using information to efficiently allocate capital," said Marc Bracken, vice president and general manager of Echologics. "The monitoring capabilities of the EchoShore TX platform for transmission mains provide customers with a cost-effective and shovel-ready solution to proactively manage their critical water infrastructure."
The EchoShore TX installation in Las Vegas is a water conservation showcase project for The Global City Teams Challenge, a collaborative network of project teams working on innovative applications of Internet of Things technologies within a smart city / smart community environment. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and project partners for the Las Vegas EchoShore TX water conservation project include the Nevada Center of Excellence, AT&T and IBM.

DENVER, June 12, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Utilities will be able to accurately detect and monitor leaks on selected water transmission mains from the office—24/7—with fixed leak detection from Echologics. This new technology, which is designed to help reduce the risk of catastrophic main breaks, was introduced at the American Water Works Association's Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE13) in Denver, Colorado. It is expected to be commercially available by the end of 2013.
A division of Mueller Co., Echologics is a leading developer and provider of acoustic-based technologies for water loss management, leak detection, and pipe condition assessment. It pioneered the development of LeakFinderRT™, its proprietary, acoustic-based system that can non-invasively locate leaks within approximately 3 to 6 feet of accuracy—without breaking ground or inserting tools into the water system.
Echologics' fixed leak detection solution combines components of LeakFinderRT™ with GPS and cellular telemetry, creating a centralized network that continuously monitors critical transmission mains and alerts utilities of leaks and transient events, which can result in catastrophic main breaks. With this new product, alerts of detected leaks and information regarding their sizes and locations will immediately be sent to utilities via email, text message or phone call, or through Echologics' web-based customer interface. 24/7 access to such information from the office will be able to help utilities more proactively and efficiently identify and repair leaks before they result in breaks that threaten public safety and carry significant costs in terms of time and resources.
"Transmission main leaks are a major concern for utilities due to the high pressures involved and the potential for soil destabilization that can quickly turn a small leak into a large break," said Marc Bracken, vice president and general manager for Echologics. "By integrating our proven, acoustic-based leak detection technology with a cellular network, we will provide utilities with around the clock information they can use to quickly mitigate leaks and better protect their critical water infrastructure assets."
Water service providers across North America and in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia have leveraged Echologics' technology to prioritize pipeline rehabilitation and replacement plans, and reduce water loss on all classes of pipe.
Echologics and Mueller Co. are subsidiaries of Mueller Water Products, Inc. (NYSE:MWA), a leading North American manufacturer and marketer of products and services that are used in the transmission, distribution and measurement of water.
