Marc Bracken, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.
Vice President and General Manager,
Echologics Engineering Inc.

 With more than 18 years of experience in acoustical and vibration engineering, and 11 years of management experience in the water industry, Marc Bracken is Vice President and General Manager of Toronto-based Echologics, an innovative solution provider in acoustic leak detection, pipeline condition assessment, and non revenue water. Echologics is a subsidiary of Mueller Water Products and has worked with utilities and municipalities across North America, and in Europe, South Africa, Singapore and Australia to prioritize water system repairs and improve water conservation.

Since starting Echologics, Marc has led the company in improving and expanding the technology base that can be applied to solve our clients needs. These efforts have made Echologics one of only broad based technology and service providers that is providing water operators with solutions to address ageing infrastructure and allowing them to address high levels of water loss that are an issue all over the world. Marc has presented numerous technical papers on leak detection and water pipe condition assessment.

Marc received Bachelor and Master degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Toronto.


Shabbir Yusuf,  P.Eng, MBA
Vice President, Research & Development and Operations
Echologics Engineering Inc.

A 20-year veteran of acoustic engineering, Shabbir Yusuf is Vice President of Research and Development and Operations for Toronto-based Echologics.

Shabbir’s manufacturing industry knowledge is complemented by his expertise and technical skills in handling vendor development and research programs.  He began his career as Commissioning Engineer for the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in India’s energy/infrastructure sector.  It was at Signode India Ltd, a division of Illinois Tool Works (ITW)—a Fortune 500 company—that his leadership skills were honed as he directed his division’s operations, manufacturing, finance, marketing and sales departments. He handled sales and product management for some leading brands of acoustics, noise control and air handling products in the Middle East region.

Shabbir holds an MBA from IIM Bangalore, a graduate degree in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur and has completed an acoustics program from Penn State University. As a result of his academic achievements as well as his wealth of industry experience, Shabbir helps Echologics to provide the non-invasive leak detection and condition assessment solutions that municipalities need.


Kevin Laven, M.Sc.
Vice President, Technical Services

Echologics Engineering Inc.

A leak detection and condition assessment expert with a track record of success in product development and commercialization, Kevin Laven oversees Technical Services for Toronto-based Echologics.

Kevin’s expertise in managing projects, staff and departmental budgets, along with his experience with a wide variety of leak detection and condition assessment technologies and techniques, is applied as he manages Echologics’ field service projects and personnel.

Kevin holds advanced degrees in physics and computer science, and has been working in the pipeline inspection and condition assessment industry for 12 years, in both academic and industry roles. He has published over 20 papers and presentations on these topics for the American Water Works Association (AWWA), American Socieity of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the International Water Association (IWA).


Dave Johnston, P.Eng
Manager, Field Service and Technology
Echologics Engineering Inc.

Since joining Echologics in 2004, Dave has worked with Echologics during various stages of its hardware development, especially in the areas of design and testing. He played a key role in developing the field methodology behind Echologics’ acoustic leak detection and leak correlation solutions, helping to give him the wealth of experience and expertise needed to manage the company’s Field Service and Technology divisions.

Dave’s background in materials engineering has helped the company develop non-invasive leak detection and condition assessment solutions for many different pipe types and materials. Along with teaching several leak detection courses for Echologics, Dave has an enormous amount of field experience with leak correlation and pipe wall integrity assessments.

Dave earned a degree in Material Engineering from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.


James E. Fisher
Manager, Non Revenue Water (NRW) Services
Echologics Engineering Inc.

James E. Fisher is Echologics’ manager of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Services. With more than 38 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry, Jim helps municipalities identify and mitigate all points of NRW loss in their water systems.

James is a member of the American Water Works Associaton (AWWA) Water Loss Task Force and Customer Metering Practices Committee and has held positions in water and wastewater treatment plant operations, maintenance, collection and distribution systems in both the public and private sectors throughout his career.

Widely published for his expertise on NRW, James previously held senior project management, engineering and marketing roles at various organizations, including ADS Environmental Services, JBS Associates, Radcom Technologies and Pitometer Associates Engineers. He also worked for Professional Services Group (PSG) as a wastewater treatment operator and a field supervisor for inflow and infiltrations (I/I) and sanitary sewer evaluation studies (SSES) conducted throughout the U.S.


Werner Richarz, Ph.D., Engineering
Chief Acoustical Engineer
Echologics Engineering Inc.

Dr. Werner Richarz is Echologics’ Chief Acoustical Engineer. His work focuses on enhancing the sound and vibration features of Echologics’ proprietary, acoustic-based system that non-invasively locates leaks and assesses the structural condition of both water and force mains. Additionally, he will help guide Echologics’ use of cross-correlations in source location and theoretical modeling of sound propagation in liquid filled pipes for future products and services.

A holder of four engineering patents and published author of more than 30 research papers on acoustics and aerodynamics, Werner has held senior engineering and consultative roles at various organizations including Aercoustics Engineering Ltd., Pinchin Environmental Inc., M&I Air System Engineering, and Coolbreeze Air Conditioning and Heating.

After earning his doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1978, Dr. Richarz held academic appointments at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Aerospace Studies and Carleton University’s Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, where he focused his research on aerodynamic noise generation, noise control and numerical methods for high speed flows. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.


Richard Belfer
Controller
Echologics Engineering Inc.

Since joining the senior management at Echologics in August 2012, Richard Belfer has led the finance and accounting functions for the Company. Richard comes to Echologics with a breadth of knowledge and experience in audit, strategic planning, restructuring and tax within the technology, manufacturing, mining, and consumer/industrial product industries. Richard has both educational and employment experience internationally within Europe, Asia and Australia.

Prior to joining Echologics, Richard spent most of his career with pwc working in assurance, tax and corporate restructuring in both Toronto, Canada and Melbourne, Australia. He also held a senior finance role with a mining company in Canada. Mr. Belfer is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA). He received a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from McMaster University and attended the Copenhagen Business School for International Business. Richard obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) from Dalhousie University.
